The Serenity Prayer—all of it, written in 1951 and still so needed!
God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen.
Noted American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr was born over in Wright City, MO on June 21, 1892. He graduated from Eden Seminary in 1913 and also earned degrees from Yale Divinity School (1914, 1915). At Eden, Professor (later President) Samuel Press, who is the namesake of the school’s main building, particularly influenced Niebuhr. Ordained in the Evangelical Synod in 1915, Niebuhr was a pastor in Detroit and went on to teach at Union Theological Seminary. He authored books like "The Nature and Destiny of Man" and "Moral Man and Immoral Society."
